Gay-friendly Cubs make good neighbors for Chicago's LGBT community

Chicago, IL - The Chicago Cubs return to venerable Wrigley Field as they host the Washington Nationals at 1:20 p.m.

Chicago native Bill Murray will throw out the first pitch.

Fans attending today will see a little different Wrigley Field as the team owners invested nearly $15 million in redoing the 98-year-old stadium.

Located in Lakeview, Wrigley Field is Illinois' third most-visited tourist attraction. A 2010 Cubs survey found that 37 percent of fans come for outside the state.

In 2009, the Cubs were purchased from the Tribune by the Ricketts family which includes Tom Ricketts and his three siblings, Pete, Laura and Todd. With the purchase, Laura became the first openly gay MLB owner.

The Cubs have participated in the Chicago Gay Pride Parade the last two years. In 2010, Laura Rickets and Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, headlined the team's float.

In 2011, the Cubs became the second professional sports team to participate in the "It Gets Better" campaign. (Video below)
