President Obama designates Stonewall National Monument to honor LGBT equality movement

President Barack Obama Friday designated a new national monument at the historic site of the Stonewall Uprising in New York City to honor the broad LGBT equality movement.

"Stonewall will be our first national monument to tell the story for the struggle for LGBT rights," Obama announced in a video released Friday.

The President honored the Stonewall patrons who fought back against a police raid on June 28, 1969, igniting the modern LGBT civil rights movement in the United States.

"They stood up and spoke out. The riots became protests. The protests became a movement. The movement ultimately became an integral part of America," he said.

The new 'Stonewall National Monument' will protect the area around the Stonewall Inn in New York City.

Pride parades are staged in over 135 cities worldwide, including Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle this Sunday, to commemorate the Stonewall rebellion.
