Dallas, TX - Michael Sam, who made history as the first openly gay player in the NFL, is expected to be signed by  the Dallas Cowboys.

According to ESPN, the Cowboys intend to sign Sam to their practice squad if he passes his physical. Sam is reportedly in Dallas.

"It's been a roller coaster this past week but I'm happy where I'm at now," Sam told MailOnline. "I'm just looking forward to being a Cowboy, my focus is on making the team."

NFL teams over the weekend had an opportunity to pick up Sam after the St. Louis Rams released him on Saturday, but none elected to do so.

The 24-year-old defensive end cleared waivers Sunday and is free to sign with any team.

Sam became the first openly gay player drafted in NFL history when the Rams drafted him in the 7th-round in May. The SEC co-defensive player of the year at Missouri, Sam came out following his final season.
