Ads from Illinois Unites for Marriage target black lawmakers

Chicago, IL - President and Michelle Obama are featured in a series of new radio ads in support of marriage equality for Illinois.

The ads, which are paid for by Illinois Unites for Marriage, are airing on Chicago stations with high numbers of African-American listeners, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The campaign is an effort to counter a new series of robocalls from a coalition of black religious leaders in Chicago opposed to marriage equality. The ads are focused on the 20-member House Black Caucus because the majority of its members - all Democrats - oppose the bill or are undecided.

Senate Bill 10, or the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, which would have made same-sex marriage legal in Illinois, could not find support in the Democratic-controlled House last May, after Senate passage in February.

A December 2012 Public Policy Poll showed that in Illinois, 60% of African Americans surveyed supported same-sex marriage.
