Facebook has updated its marriage status to include recognition for users who are married to a person of the same sex by providing new marriage icons representing same-sex couples.
Previously users were forced to use an icon designed and representing straight married couples.
Facebook has made a number of changes to include LGBT users. Last year the social network site added ‘In a Civil Union' and ‘In a Domestic Partnership' option to user profiles.
GLAAD awarded Facebook a GLAAD Media award for its effort to combat cyberbullying.
The move comes as Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes married his partner Sean Eldridge on Saturday in New York. The couple were married at their home in Garrison.
