Chicago, IL -
Later today, the ACLU and Lambda Legal will file lawsuits in Illinois to demand legal marriage rights for same-sex couples.
The lawsuits, representing 25 gay and lesbian couples from across Illinois, will be announced during simultaneous press conferences in Springfield and Chicago scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 30.
"Tomorrow same-sex couples from across the state will be on hand to share their stories about why it's just time for Illinois to allow them to marry," Lambda Legal Marriage Project Director Camilla Taylor said in a statement released Tuesday.
The Chicago press conference will be held at the Westin Chicago River North, 320 N. Dearborn while the Springfield event is at the State House Inn, 101 E. Adams.
In early May, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn (D-IL) joined President Obama in support of marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples.
The planned lawsuits will make some of the same arguments used in Iowa and California. Lambda Legal also has marriage equality lawsuits pending in New Jersey and Nevada.
Same-sex marriage is legal in Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, Washington state as well as the District of Columbia.
