Pastor Joel Osteen has made clear that he believes homosexuality is sinful, but the televangelist told Oprah Winfrey during an interview on Sunday that he believes gay people will get into heaven.

"Will a gay person be accepted into heaven, as you see it," Oprah asked Osteen during an interview for her new program, Oprah's Next Chapter.

"I believe they will," responded Osteen. "Sometimes we look at gay being a bigger sin than being proud or not telling the truth. I don't think God categorizes sins."

Osteen is pastor of the Houston megachurch Lakewood Church, which has about 13,000 members. Winfrey traveled to Houston to meet Osteen and attend his service.

The popular pastor has previously addressed his views on homosexuality. In October he made headlines for saying that he would, out of respect, attend a gay weeding in support of a close friend or family member.

Osteen, who has a number of books on the New York Times bestseller list, told Oprah he is working on a primetime television show this year.

Oprah's Next Chapter airs Sundays at 9/8c on OWN.
