Hollendoner to leave Howard Brown Health Center

Joe Hollendoner, founding director of the Broadway Youth Center at Howard Brown Health Center (HBHC), is leaving his role as vice president and chief program officer with the community healthcare organization effective January 6, 2012.
30-year-old Hollendoner, who was hired by HBHC at age 20 to create a program to address the health needs of LGBT youth, was named HBHC's chief program officer in 2010.
Hollendoner will pursue an opportunity with the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC).
"I look forward to the next decade (plus) of service to my community," Hollendoner said on Facebook.
Hollendoner's activism started in his teens as a South Suburban youth activist. He began his professional experience as HIV Prevention Coordinator at Aunt Martha's Youth Service Center when he was 16 years old and worked as Program Manager for GLSEN prior to joining Howard Brown. He received his Masters in Social Work in 2004.
Today the Broadway Youth Center (BYC), which Hollendoner helped create, serves more than 5,000 LGBT and other at-risk youth each year, providing free-of-charge HIV testing and counseling, support for LGBT homeless youth and job training.
In 2010, Hollendoner was named one of 10 recipients of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Community Health Leaders Award. A report in the Windy City Times indicated that Hollendoner will donate a majority of the $125,000 prize to further his work at BYC.
The Times' report also noted that Hollendoner's departure is the latest in a line of eight senior level officers who have left Howard Brown this year.
