Traverse City, MI - The word "gay" has been returned to a traditional Christmas song after a Michigan elementary school music teacher tried to substitute the word with "bright" in "Deck the Halls."

According to the teacher at Cherry Knoll Elementary, the word was removed because the students laughed every time they sang "gay" in the line "Don we now our gay apparel."

Parents were outraged by the teacher's censorship and many took to the school's Facebook page. One parent wrote that taking the word "gay" out of the carol just drew attention to it and made it "a big deal."

The school's principal, Chris Parker, told 7&4 News in Traverse City that he was disappointed and called it a "teachable moment."

In a released statement, Dr. Jane Mohr, the school district's assistant superintendent said, "We are so very sorry this happened. The teacher made a poor decision and it should have never happened."

The word "gay" has since been returned.
