Toronto - Buddy and Pedro, the so-called gay penguins, will be reunited by spring according to a Toronto Zoo official.

"There will be a limited time of separation, but it will not be permanent," Tom Mason, the zoo's curator of invertebrates and birds, told
PinkNews.co.uk
. "If Pedro and Buddy wish to get back together, they will be welcome to do so."

The two love birds were split up so they could find female penguins to mate with. African Penguins are an endangered species and officials say both birds have strong genes.

Worldwide outrage erupted over the zoo's decision to separate the penguins who may or may not be gay. 20-year-old Buddy and 10-year-old Pedro have displayed mating behaviors toward each other, including mating calls, standing alone together and grooming one another.

Zoo officials say the pair share a "social bond" which doesn't necessarily have to be sexual.

Buddy and Pedro will be able to go back to being a couple after they mate with female penguins.
