As America came together Sunday to remember the worst terrorist attack on American soil, Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern (R-Oklahoma City) has again ignited controversy by insisting that homosexuality is more dangerous to America than terrorism.
The Republican lawmaker spoke on August 31 with Peter LaBarbera of the hate group Americans for Truth About Homosexuality to promote her new book, The Stoning of Sally Kern.
"You know," she told LaBarbera, "if you just look at it in practical terms, which has destroyed and ended the life of more people? Terrorism attack here in America or HIV/AIDS? In the last 20 years, 15 to 20 years, we've had maybe three terrorist attacks on our soil with a little over 5,000 people regrettably losing their lives. In the same time frame, there have been hundreds of thousands who have died because of having AIDS. So which one's the biggest threat?"
The 64-year-old Kern made headlines in 2008 when she first compared gays to terrorists, telling a group of fellow Republicans that the "homosexual agenda is destroying this nation."
She also accused homosexuals of pushing a "gay agenda" and trying to "indoctrinate" children through tolerance education and gay-straight alliances.
Kern, the wife of a Baptist minister, tried to explain her earlier remarks during the radio broadcast with LaBarbera.
Americans For Truth About Homosexuality, based in Naperville, Illinois, is labeled a hate group by the Souther Poverty Law Center. The group lost its tax-exempt status in June.
The 47-year-old LaBarbera has a long history in Illinois' anti-gay movement. He continues to bill himself as a credible source for media outlets on anti-gay issues.
Kern was reprimanded earlier this year by the Oklahoma House when she said that blacks "don't work as hard" as white people.
