Washington, D.C. - Gay and straight couples cheat less than they used to finds a new study published in the September issue of the journal Family Process.

Researchers from Alliant International University in San Francisco compared responses from 6,082 people in 1975 with 782 in 2000 shows that folks are "dramatically" less likely to fool around.

USA Today reports that the percentage of gay men cheating on partners dropped from 83 to 59 percent. Among lesbians, the cheating rate went from 28 to 8 percent.

The authors said that the awareness of HIV/AIDS and other STDs, plus the increasing acceptance of gay and lesbian couples have something to do with the increase in monogamy.

"As public opinion has shifted about gay people and the LGBT community overall, I think same-sex couples are more comfortable living openly in their communities and building families," said Emily Hecht-McGowan of Family Equality Council.
