Spartanburg, S.C. - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said that the gay community is on a "jihad" against him because of his opposition to gay marriage.

Back in 2003, sex columnist (and future "It Gets Better" founder) Dan Savage started an online campaign against Santorum, who had said in criticism of gay marriage that the definition of marriage had never involved "man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be."

Savage encouraged other people to use the word "santorum" to refer to a "by-product of anal sex." The campaign worked; even today, a search for the word "santorum" will generally bring up sexual references above any website for the candidate.

On Friday in Spartanburg, S.C., Santorum said he's fed up.

"So the gay community said: 'He's comparing gay sex to incest and polygamy; how dare he do this,' and they have gone out on a, I would argue, jihad against Rick Santorum since then," Santorum said.

"I said, 'This is a napkin. A napkin is what a napkin is. It isn't a paper towel. It isn't a car.' You can call a napkin a car, but it doesn't make it a car. You can call a paper towel a chair, but it doesn't make it a chair. Marriage is what marriage is."
