Chicago, IL - The number of gay households shot up 49 percent since 2000, according to the U.S. Census.

In Illinois, the Chicago Tribune reported, the number of households being led by gays or lesbians was up 40 percent.

The 49 percent increase is the overall number among the first 30 states for which the Census has released 2010 data.

In Chicago, the increase was 25 percent.

More conservative suburban areas saw bigger increases, probably because there were more people in the closet in those spots. The Tribune said that in suburban Will County, the number was of gay couples was up 77 percent and the number of lesbian couples was up 108 percent.
