Washington, D.C. - Public support for gay marriage is shooting upwards, according to a new study.

The researchers -- a former pollster for President Barack Obama, and a former pollster for President George W. Bush -- compiled polls from several sources over several years.

Their results -- that support for gay marriage has been going up about five percentage points a year for the past two years, after going up only about one percentage point a year before that.

The pollsters said that is the equivalent of a 500 percent increase.

Even more significantly, younger people are supporting gay marriage at higher rates than ever before, and eventually they will replace older, more conservative voters whose views are less likely to change.

The study also found that gay marriage is supported by:
68% of 18-29 year olds (up 11 points since 2005)
65% of 30-39 year olds (up 23 points)
52% of 40-49 year olds (up 17 points)
