Hollywood -
Hugh Jackman said that he almost pursued something other than acting, because he was worried that his interest in musical theater would make others think he was gay.
He told Xtra.ca that he had a role in a production of Camelot as a child, and his father was supportive, but his brother called him a "poof."
"I would love to say I was Billy Elliot, but I wasn't. My dad was like, 'Terrific,' but my brother was like, 'Ah, you poof!' I was only about 10 or 11, but I remember thinking that this is not a good thing."
It wasn't until that same brother saw a production of 42nd Street that he realized there was nothing wrong with being gay -- or being in musical theater.
"My brother came up to me and said, ‘Man, I want to apologize. I'm such an idiot… you should be up there doing that," Jackman said. "It was really a kind of sweet thing for him to say. I joined up the next day."
Jackman had intended to go into journalism.
