London - The British Government is considering a plan that would ban gay and lesbian kisses from television shows from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

British law already requires that programming in that time period be suitable for children. The new rules would further clarify what is "suitable."

"It is hard to protect children in the internet and mobile-phone age but we have to do something," a source close to Prime Minister David Cameron told the Mail. "For some parents, what has been considered acceptable in the past – such as that Brookside kiss – is not appropriate for children to see early in the evening."

In 1994, two female characters on the popular British soap opera "Brookside" kissed. It was the first kiss before the "watershed," which is what the British call the 9 p.m. hour.

The new push to ban pre-watershed gay and lesbian kissing is being led by the British "Mothers Union."

Ironically, Prime Minister Cameron created a supportive video for gay teens as part of the "It Gets Better" campaign.
