New estimate of LGBT population in U.S.: 9 Million

A new study from the University of California-Los Angeles finds that about nine million American adults identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.
Researcher Gary J. Gates at the Williams Institute for the Study of Sexual Orientation and Public Policy concluded that 3.5 percent identify at LGBT.
Slightly more said they are bisexual (1.8 percent) than gay or lesbian (1.7 percent). Women are "substantially" more likely than men to identify as bisexual.
He said that if the numbers are expanded to include everyone who's had at least some feelings of same-sex sexual attraction, the numbers increase to 11 percent of adult Americans, about 25.6 million people.
About 11 million adult Americans have had some sort of same-sex sexual encounter, comprising 8.2 percent.
