Washington, D.C. - A new examination of polls on Catholic attitudes towards homosexuality find that members of the faith are a lot more liberal than their Vatican leaders.

The Washington Post reports that their recent poll shows 63 percent of Catholics support same-sex marriage; another poll cited in the same story shows Catholic support at 53 percent.

A majority of Catholics also support gay and lesbian adoptive parents (60 percent) and laws that would protect gays and lesbians at work (73 percent).

The Public Religion Research Institute also found that 52 percent of Catholic registered voters in New York state and 54 percent in California support gay marriage.
