Kathy Griffin has learned that if you're going to insult a Palin, you shouldn't do it in front of the troops.
During her opening monologue on "VH1 Divas Salute the Troops," Griffin said Bristol Palin is fat.
"She is the only contestant in the history of [Dancing With the Stars] to actually gain weight," Griffin said.
The troops in the Miramar Base audience booed.
"She gained like 30 pounds a week," Griffin continued. "She's like the white Precious."
The "Precious" reference is to the movie about the severely obese teenager who was molested.
Bristol Palin responded later via FOX News.
"The audience's reaction spoke volumes and the decent people I know would probably have booed her, too," Palin said.
VH1 executives said they debated whether to keep the comments in the broadcast, but apparently decided that a) Griffin is an experienced comedienne and can accept when a joke falls flat and b) controversy breeds ratings.
