Chicago, IL - Wednesday, December 1st is World AIDS Day, meant for raising awareness and forwarding the fight against AIDS around the globe.

Many are marking the day with encouraging milestones in AIDS research this year, including the recent announcement that the oral antiretroviral drug Truvada helps prevent HIV in gay men.

A Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report released in September indicated one in five gay and bisexual men living in major US cities are HIV positive, and almost half of these men do not know they are infected.

An estimated 56,300 Americans are newly infected with HIV every year.

Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Ryan Seacrest and Justin Timberlake are a few celebrities planning to "end their digial life" Wednesday as they've pledged to stay off social networks until 1 millions dollars is raised for the "Keep a Child Alive" organization, which was co-founded by Alicia Keys.

MTV is encouraging young people to GYT (Get Yourself Tested) with special World AIDS Day programing that includes airing the new documentary, "Me, Myself and HIV."

Chicago's iconic Wrigley Building will be illuminated red to mark World AIDS Day this evening and to raise awareness of the commitment of the global health community to work together to virtually eliminate the transmission of HIV from mother to child by 2015.

Chicago is one of more than 30 cities in the United States that will light their most distinctive landmarks in red, joining New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Miami, Seattle and others.

World AIDS Day is an important day to remember the thousands who have lost their lives to the disease, and honor those currently living with HIV -- it's also a day to get tested.
