Chicago, IL - Two avid supporters of Chicago's lesbian and gay community were re-elected to their respective Illinois General Assembly offices. Sen. Heather Steans (D-7th) defeated Republican Adam Robinson (84-16 percent) and Rep. Sara Feigenholtz (D-12th) defeated Republican Dave Lenkowski (70-30 percent).

Steans sponsored bill 2468, the Equal Marriage Act, which aims to provide eligible same-sex and opposite-sex couples with the same treatment as those in a civil marriage. In a Windy City Times interview earlier this year, Steans said, "I do support civil unions, but only as a step toward full equal marriage rights; full rights has to be the clear goal."

Feigenholtz came to the re-election bid with a long solid record of supporting LGBT rights and supports full equality for gays and lesbians.

Regarding the $13 billion budget Illinois suffers, "we can't cut our way or tax our way out of the budget crisis," Feigenholtz told ChicagoPride.com. She went on to say "Illinois' flat (income) tax is problematic and regressive and there is not one broad brush fix. Small business is where the jobs are. We need to make a fertile environment for them."

Feigenholtz has been a strong advocate for funding for HIV/AIDS treatment and is passionate about supporting local health care services which include Howard Brown. Although she believes the sales tax rate is too high, she does give it credit for keeping Cook County health services available.
