The Gay Vote: Chicago and Illinois Voting Resources

Chicago, IL - The people of Illinois voted on Tuesday in midterm elections to determine their choices for the replacement of Barack Obama's U.S. Senate seat currently held by Roland Burris and Illinois Governor.

Gay rights advocates consider this an important election for LGBT rights in Illinois as they see significant differences between Incumbent Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn and his Republican opponent, state Sen. Bill Brady.

Quinn remains solid in his support of civil unions legislation, yet has failed to show support for full marriage equality. Quinn says he will sign civil unions legislation.

Brady not only opposes same-sex marriage and civil unions, but he favors an amendment to the Illinois constitution banning equal marriage rights for LGBT citizens. Brady has said he would veto any civil union legislation.

Quinn has received the endorsement of Equality Illinois, a gay rights advocacy group.

The other race being watched by gay rights groups and the nation is for Illinois U.S. Senate. where Republican Rep. Mark Kirk, a five-term North Shore congressman and Navy reservist, is running against Illinois Treasurer and Democratic nominee Alexi Giannoulias for the U.S. Senate seat previously held by President Obama.

The Human Right Campaign (HRC), the nation's largest gay rights advocate, pulled its endorsement of Kirk after he voted against repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell in June.

Giannoulias has called for the immediate repeal of DADT.

Voter turnout is traditionally light in non-presidential elections; however, bad weather should not be an excuse because today's forecast is for sunshine and a high temperature near 55.

Polls are open today from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The heaviest period of voting generally occurs between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

ChicagoPride.com does not endorse political candidates, but media partner The Windy City Times has prepared an LGBT General Election Guide to help you make an informed decision when voting.
