Washington, D.C. - GOProud, a national organization of gay conservatives, today endorsed Congressman Mark Kirk for U.S. Senate in Illinois.

"Mark Kirk supports common-senese conservative solutions that will improve the lives of all Illinoisans, including gay and lesbian Illinoisans," said Jimmy LaSalvia, Executive Director of GOProud. "From taxes to healthcare to jobs and the economy, Mark Kirk consistently supports policies that would benefit gay and lesbian voters in Illinois."

Kirk, a five-term North Shore congressman, continues to hold a slim lead over his Democrat challenger Alexi Giannoulias in recent polls, though most political experts say the race is too close to call.

"Mark Kirk's record in the House is one that gay and lesbian voters in Illinois should be proud of," said Christopher R. Barron, Chairman of the GOProud Board of Directors. Before breaking with the Log Cabin Republicans, Barron was that group's former political director.

The Log Cabin Republicans have not made an endorsement for U.S. Senate in Illinois.

The Human Right Campaign, the nation's largest gay rights advocate, pulled its endorsement of Kirk after he voted against repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell in June.

Giannoulias supports the repeal of DADT.

The general election is Nov. 2.
