Republican candidate for NY governor Carl Paladino: kids 'brainwashed' into accepting gays

New York City - Republican candidate for governor of New York Carl Paladino continues to defend his views on gays, and in fact has expanded on them.

On Sunday, he talked with a group of rabbis about homosexuality.

"I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family, and I don't want them brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option — it isn't," he said. "I didn't march in the gay parade this year — the gay pride parade this year. My opponent did, and that's not the example we should be showing our children."

Paladino later said the comments were in a prepared speech given to him by the group of orthodox rabbis. But that doesn't mean he was sorry; in fact, on Monday he went on to criticize anyone who takes kids to gay pride parades.

"Would you take your children to a gay pride parade?" Paladino asked Maat Lauer on the "Today" show on NBC. "I don't think it's proper for them to go there and watch a couple of grown men grind against each other. I don't think that's proper. I think it's disgusting."

Paladino's Democratic opponent Andrew Cuomo was outraged.

"He's probably the last person I'll take advice from on how to raise my daughters," Cuomo told the New York Times.

Fellow Republican and former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani said that Paladino's remarks were "highly offensive" and that he should apologize.

The remarks struck some New Yorkers as particularly insensitive given the recent arrests of nine men for a brutal hate crime attack against three gay men in the Bronx, and the suicide of a gay Rutgers student.
