Two suburban Chicago men charged with hate crime attack

35-year-old Mohammad Shaban of Hickory Hills and 22-year-old Akram Alshoweat of Oak Lawn are charged with a felony hate crime for allegedly shouting lesbian slurs at a woman in a restaurant.
The Cook County State's Attorney said that on June 28, the two men harassed the victim at a restaurant in southwest suburban Hickory Hills.
They shouted at her in Arabic, hit her, and stole her cell phone, keys and wallet.
The State's Attorney said that once the Arabic was translated, police realized that the suspects had been using lesbian slurs.
The men could be sentenced to seven years in prison.
