Gay candidate raised $150 during campaign

Chicago, IL - In Kentucky this fall, a 24-year-old gay man without a college degree will face down a Republican incumbent in the battle for the state's 45th district state house seat.

Matthew Vanderpool beat a 50-year-old Air Force veteran in the Democratic primary.

Vanderpool started college a few years ago, but dropped out after he was hit by a drunk boater while he was jet skiing. He plans to return to college part-time this fall.

"My plan has always been to stay true to myself and talk to people about the issues," Vanderpool told the Lexington Herald-Leader.

In November in an interview with Kentucky's LGBT media outlet United We Stand, Vanderpool said his sexuality was not going to be a big part of his campaign.

"I am not the gay candidate," he said. "I am the candidate who happens to be gay."

Vanderpool's Republican opponent, state Rep. Stan Lee, is described by LGBT groups as "Kentucky's homophobic nightmare."
