Disagrees with her husband

Chicago, IL - Former First Lady Laura Bush says she supports gay marriage.

On Larry King Live on Tuesday night, she said she and her husband former President George W. Bush disagrees on the issue.

"There are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman," she said. "But I also know that, you know, when couples are committed to each other and love each other, that they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has."

"I understand totally what George thinks and what other people think about marriage being between a man and a woman," she continued. "And it's a real, you know, reversal really for [them] to accept gay marriage."

Mrs. Bush told King that she let her husband know her thoughts on the issue while they were in the White House, but they didn't duke it out.

Conservative leaders told ABC News they were disapointed.

"It's disappointing to hear Laura Bush, who is a well respected and admired former first lady, espouse positions on marriage and the value of human life that are contrary not only to her husband's but arguably, according to polls, in conflict with the majority of Americans," said Carrie Gordon Earll, spokeswoman for the conservative group Focus on the Family.
