The Outsiders' abode stays gold in Tulsa

The popularity of the coming-of-age story The Outsiders, based on the novel by S.E. Hinton, continues to grow decades after its release in 1976. Ponyboy Curtis and his journey through his teen years struck a chord with readers that translated into a 1983 movie by Francis Ford Coppola. The film starred a cast that eventually had illustrious careers, including Rob Lowe in his feature film debut and Ralph Macchio, who was 15 at the time of filming. The project helped Macchio gain the role of Daniel LaRusso in The Karate Kid and the cinematic exposure proved fruitful for actors such as C. Thomas Howell, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze and Diane Lane.

This ragtag group of outsiders has spawned a tuneful celebration of friendship with The Outsiders: A New Musical, released in 2023. It's the second stage adaptation of the play based on the source material and the musical was originally set to premiere at the Goodman Theatre, but was derailed by the pandemic. It landed at La Jolla Playhouse before hitting the East Coast in New York at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre last year, where it garnered four Tony Awards.

Sodapop still has his traveling shoes on as he makes his way around the country for the international tour. This tour kicked off at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center in Oklahoma, near the set of the original shoot. The Outsiders House Museum is located at 731 North St. Louis Avenue in Tulsa and blends in so well with the surrounding buildings that it is easy to miss. Hip Hop artist Danny Boy O'Connor, known from the group House of Pain, purchased the house in 2016 to save the structure and restore the property to its full nostalgic potential.

This hidden place honors both the movie and theater incarnations by lodging costumes, props and photographs at every turn. Ticket holders can see autographs from the cast and crew involved with The Outsiders, including signings directly on the walls. The film plays in a loop in the living room, where longtime fans can immerse themselves in memorabilia, including a fake chocolate cake. There are easter eggs placed strategically throughout the various rooms and pop into the kitchen to observe frying eggs in a pan for breakfast.

The Curtis Brothers' house comes to life through the many donated items from people linked to the movie. Coppola's chair is set up behind glass for preservation and Lane's iconic skirt is displayed complete with a Coke stain. In the bedroom's desk area, one can find inspirational writing relics and tributes to horses.

This trip through time will satisfy both new and old admirers alike as they investigate this unique environment. As they exit, the gift shop is directly behind the humble abode, where they may find keepsakes and mementos for their own collections.

Filming took place in the single-family home from March 29 through May 15 in 1982 and the Crutchield neighborhood is where many of the key scenes were created. There is more to explore nearby in North Tulsa, such as the Admiral Twin Drive-In and the Cinema Circle theater.

The legacy of the movie is over 40 years old and continues to make new fans feel like insiders thanks to this unforgettable landmark at The Outsiders Way.
