The First Homosexuals: The Birth of a New Identity, 1869-1939 is a new exhibition housed at Wrightwood 659 just in time for Pride month. Running from now until July 26, gives spectators plenty of time to view this international collection before it leaves the building.

There are more than 300 pieces of media spaced throughout several floors in the gallery run by a private owner. The art ranges from paintings, sculptures and drawings to movies and photographs.

The year 1869 is when the cultural term “homosexual” began and this exhibition starts from that year to work its way forward in time. Jonathan D. Katz and his team have curated and organized the materials to maximize the space in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

One hundred and twenty-five artists are represented from across the globe, with South Asia, Chile and Denmark just a few of the countries among them.

Ticket holders can roam freely throughout the museum and travel through time with distinct periods as they go.

One room is titled Beyond the Binary and the work within has not traveled to the United States previously. The only portrait of Oscar Wilde during his lifetime can now be found here.

Tops and bottoms are addressed in a Japanese exhibit and gender identity is displayed with subjects wearing drag.

Tours have been scheduled on select dates during the run and an accompanying film series at Facets will happen Wednesday nights in June.
