April 5 is officially National Deep-Dish Pizza Day around the globe and there's no better place to celebrate it than in Chicago. The exact way this style of pizza is dished out and created may vary from each establishment around the city, but some of the basics remain the same.
The classic pie is made with thick dough, smothered in chunky tomato sauce and piled high with cheese then cooked in a pan with a high edge inside an oven. Toppings range from vegetables such as mushrooms, green peppers and onions to meats such as sausage and pepperoni. Some chefs think outside of the pizza box by using chicken, broccoli and spinach among other ingredients. Often a build-your-own option makes the most sense to suit the individual guest's tastes.
The history of deep-dish pizza runs deep and the inventor of the type of pizza has been debated over the years, but the recipe was delivered to the Windy City by Italian immigrants.
There's always a hot debate about who has the best Chicago-style pizza, but Giordano's is a slice above the rest. Established in 1974 by two Italian brothers, the iconic company celebrates 50 years in the business this year.
The creators stand out from the crowd in this healthy competition by using three pounds of signature mozzarella cheese from Wisconsin cheesemakers on the average pizza. Enlisting local farmers as much as possible makes a difference and it shows. The dough is made by hand to supply the 60 locations nationwide.
Mayor Brandon Johnson officially declared April 5 as Giordano's Pizza Day in Chicago. Who knew a political pizza would taste so good?
For convenience, a plethora of frozen pizzas are sold at store locations and local supermarkets. The world-famous pizza company can also ship anywhere in the continental United States if leaving the house is challenging. This combats the heavy volume of diners and tourists that flock in from around the world to sample these delicious Neapolitan pizzas.
To honor the 50th anniversary the company offers 50 percent off all pizzas every Tuesday in April and May of 2024 for folks that dine in. There are other Italian cuisine options besides pizza to cut into at the store level such as salads, sandwiches and pasta.
