April 5 is officially National Deep-Dish Pizza Day around the globe and there's no better place to celebrate it than in Chicago. The exact way this style of pizza is dished out and created may vary from each establishment around the city, but some of the basics remain the same.
The classic pie is made with thick dough, smothered in chunky tomato sauce and piled high with cheese then cooked in a pan with a high edge inside an oven. Toppings range from vegetables such as mushrooms, green peppers and onions to meats such as sausage and pepperoni. Some chefs think outside of the pizza box by using chicken, broccoli and spinach among other ingredients. Often a build-your-own option makes the most sense to suit the individual guest's tastes.
