Ms. Marvel breaks another glass ceiling

Back in 2014, Mrs. Marvel debuted as the first Muslin character to have her own comic book. The representation mattered to a legion of teenage girls who could finally see themselves brought to life with the hero. Now in 2022 Mrs. Marvel busts through another glass ceiling with a new live-action television series.

Kamala Khan lives in Jersey City where she worships the ground Captain Marvel walks on as a true fan. She is 16 years old and is Pakistani-American. When magical bangles give her powers, she emulates her hero to fight crime.

This is the seventh television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe produced by Marvel Studios. Over the course of six episodes, Ms. Marvel prepares the sequel to the Captain Marvel film called The Marvels slated for 2023.

Actress Iman Vellani is a valuable find for the casting director as she easily tackles a role similar to her real-life story. Vellani was born in Karachi, Pakistan and is a massive Avengers fangirl.

Ms. Marvel's powers are a tad different in the series and her Inhuman history is traded for an easier backstory that may frustrate a few fans. Some of Khan's classmates are part of the LGBTQ+ community as in most high schools and her awkward embarrassment of her parents will certianly ring true for many viewers.

The humor is just right and the special effects obviously aren't cheap. It all pays off as the episodes released so far look slick and have a strong supporting cast for Vellani to play off of throughout the growing plot points.

Music is also an important component that keeps the action and entertainment moving along at a rapid pace. Comic conventions should take a cue from the one depicted on the show. Overhead lighting is never flattering while taking pictures with artists and mood lighting is everything for a large event environment.

The Young Avengers are gathering together and Mrs. Marvel is a worthy addition to the team!

Stream Ms. Marvel on Disney+ every Wednesday concluding on July 13, 2022.
