Event Attracts Nearly 5,000 Participants

Sunny skies greeted the estimated 5,000 Chicagoans who participated in this year's AIDS Run & Walk Chicago, held on Saturday, September 20, at Grant Park's Museum Campus. (event photos) The event netted $100,000 for essential HIV/AIDS projects at community-based agencies across Metro Chicago and brought much needed attention to the continuing battle against HIV/AIDS.
"Chicagoans from all backgrounds came out to participate," said Mark Ishaug, executive director of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. "We want extend our sincere thanks to all those individuals, teams, corporations and sponsors who unselfishly supported this year's event."
Since 1988, AFC--the Run & Walk's beneficiary and the largest source of HIV/AIDS philanthropic support in the Midwest--has provided nearly $13 million to area HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy groups.
Winners of post-event awards were: Matthew Knoop of Chicago as overall 5K run winner (male) and Maureen Giroux, also from Chicago, as overall 5K run winner (female).
"Most Spirited Team" awards went to Team Old Navy in the corporate category and Haymarket Center as the non-corporate honoree. "Fastest Team" awards for the best running time went to the Lincoln Park Pacers (corporate) and to Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center (non-corporate).
The event also included a Health Expo featuring more than 20 area HIV/AIDS service organizations and other groups as well pre-event, course route and post-event musical entertainment.
