Bucharest, Romania -
Dozens of Romanian rights groups warned the government that a proposed constitutional referendum to ban same-sex marriage will push the European Union state onto a populist, authoritarian track leading to an erosion of democratic rights and liberties.
The plan for a referendum came about after the Coalition collected 3 million signatures last year in favor of changing the constitutional definition of marriage as a union strictly between a man and a woman from the existing "spouses".
