Chicago, IL - An off-duty Chicago firefighter was beaten in the Lincoln Park neighborhood this morning, suffering facial fractures and internal bleeding.

Police responded to an emergency call about 4 a.m. and found the 24-year-old man on the street near Halsted and Dickens, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer. Two men were taken in custody, police said.

The South Side firefighter was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and was in critical condition about 7:30 a.m., the fire department said. He was undergoing surgery.

"He's in pretty bad shape," a source said. The fire department says the man has been a firefighter for about a year.

There were no indications the beating was connected to recent attacks and robberies in the Lincoln Park and Lakeview neighborhoods, police said in a news media notification.
