Chicago, IL -

Chicago Police have released the man who had been questioned in connection with one in a string of muggings in Lincoln Park in recent weeks, police said this morning.

A Cook County assistant state's attorney did not believe there was sufficient evidence to charge the West Side gang member in connection with the Aug. 1 robbery in the 2000 block of North Cleveland Avenue, according to a police news release. On Tuesday, police had said the "person of interest" had been identified in a lineup by the mugging victim.

The suspect was released Tuesday night, according to police.

Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis had expressed hope Tuesday that the arrest made Monday would "lead us somewhere" in the investigation of four Lincoln Park-area robberies that week characterized by swift and violent attacks in the early-morning hours by a group of several people that robbed victims -- most of them young men -- of wallets and other personal items.
