Embattled appointed U.S. Sen. Roland Burris made it official today -- he won't seek election next year to a full six-year term.
"Life is about choices," he told reporters, reading from a statement. "Make no mistake. I love serving in the United States Senate. Make no mistake about that. I love serving the people of Illinois. . .In making this decision, I was called to choose between spending my time raising funds or spending my time raising issues for my state. I believe that the business of the people of the state of Illinois should always come first."
The 71-year-old Burris, a former state comptroller and attorney general, made the announcement at a South Side hotel. He read a statement for 10 minutes, but did not take reporters' questions. Supporters shouted "Don't do it" and "Run, Roland, run."
