First federally approved monument honoring LGBT veterans is located in Elwood, Illinois

On Monday, May 30 the Chicago Chapter of American Veterans for Equal Rights (AVER) will hold the first anniversary celebration to the monument honoring lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) veterans.
The monument was dedicated last year on Memorial Day at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
The ceremony will be held at 2:00 p.m., with chartered buses leaving the Center on Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted at noon.
LGBT service members have served throughout the history of the U.S. military, some of that time under an outright ban supported by regulation and some under Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT), a policy supported by law. Before the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010 was signed into law by President Barack Obama, nearly 14,000 services members were discharged.
AVER is a non-profit, chapter-based association of active, reserve and veteran service members dedicated to full and equal rights and treatment for all present and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces. The Chicago chapter was founded in 1991.
