TV ads attack the freedom to marry in Iowa

Des Moines, Iowa - Anti-gay television ads, directly attacking the freedom for gays and lesbians to marry, have begun airing in Iowa.

The ads created by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) and paid for with out-of-state funding seek to generate fear and intolerance by referring to the consequence of same-sex marriage as "gathering storms" that threaten families of Iowa.

During the course of the ad, three actors relay stories that, according to the ad, "are based on real life incidents" an argument critics call inaccurate and misleading.

"Ads like this one don't encourage reasonable discussion, but instead add to the confusion and misinformation already abundantly prevalent in our national discourse," writes Anthony DiBella a media critic for the Examiner.com.

NOM, the same group that spent millions to pass Prop. 8 in California, wants to stop what it calls the redefinition of marriage and is urging the public to weigh in the issue on same sex marriage in Iowa.

OneIowa.org has generated an online petition in an attempt to counter the anti-gay message and stop the use of out-of-state funds to take away the rights of those living in the state.

The ads which cost $1,000 each will continue to run through the weekend on WHO-TV in Des Moines.

The Iowa Supreme Court ruled on April 27 that the state's law banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional and violates the rights of gay and lesbian couples.

Watch the anti-gay ad then read why the ad is misleading and inaccurate.
