Vermont Senate overrides Governor's veto

Montpelier, VT - Earlier this morning, the Vermont Senate voted to override Governor Jim Douglas' veto of a bill that would allow same-sex marriage. A month ago, the Senate approved the bill 26-4.

Last Thursday, the House voted 95-52 to approve the bill which was only 5 votes short of the two-thirds majority needed for an override. Supporters of the bill have been working all weekend to gain additional support in the House to override the Governor's promised veto.

Today, the House will vote again. Supporters are hoping that there are enough votes to override the veto by the Republican Governor.
If the override succeeds, Vermont would become the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriages and would join the states of Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa.
