Sir Elton John posted a photo of Vladimir Putin to his Instagram on Tuesday to thank the Russian president for discussing gay rights with him over the phone.

"Thank-you to President Vladimir Putin for reaching out and speaking via telephone with me today," he posted. "I look forward to meeting with you face-to-face to discuss LGBT equality in Russia."

Putin's call came after Elton John did an interview with the BBC saying he wanted to meet with the Russian leader over his "ridiculous" attitude to gay rights.

"I would like to meet [Putin]," he told the BBC. "It's probably pie in the sky ... He may laugh behind my back when he shuts the door and call me an absolute idiot, but at least I can think I have the conscience to say I tried."

In 2013, Putin signed a law that prohibits the promotion of "gay propaganda" to minors. Putin continues to defend the law, saying that it was needed to protect children, and denies claims that Russia is homophobic.
