Dallas, TX - The Dallas Cowboys announced Tuesday that Michael Sam, the first openly gay player in the NFL, has been waived from the practice squad.

The 24-year-old defensive end joined the team on Sept. 3 after getting cut by the St. Louis Rams.

"I want to thank the Jones family and the entire Cowboys organization for this opportunity, as well as my friends, family, teammates and fans for their support. While this is disappointing, I will take the lessons I learned here in Dallas and continue to fight for an opportunity to prove that I can play every Sunday," Sam wrote on Twitter following his release.

Sam became the first openly gay player drafted in NFL history when the Rams selected him in the 7th-round in May. The SEC co-defensive player of the year at Missouri, Sam came out following his final season.
