Thirty years after the film that inspired it premiered, Hell in a Handbag Productions (website) set sail on its maiden voyage with POSEIDON! An Upside Down Musical. "Bottoms Up!" with a cast including David Cerda, Steve Hickson, Brigitte Ditmars, Jennifer Connelly, Merrie Greenfield, Ed Jones, BC Kalz, Ron Kelly, Steve Kimbrough, Todd McConville, Michael Miller and Joe Waterman donning hot pants, go-go boots and "just panties" while struggling through a world where up is down and down is up. Now that hit show will be appearing in the New York International Fringe Festival, (website) August 20th - 23rd.
One of Chicago's biggest recent hits, POSEIDON! Enjoyed a smash run at Theatre Building Chicago, playing to both critical and popular acclaim. This new work was then extended twice. Hell In A Handbag's managing director, Steve Hickson, expresses the thrill felt by the entire company as they launch their New York premiere, "We’re all very excited to be tackling the BIG APPLE."

Is the latest stroke of genius from the musical pen of Handbag's artistic director, David Cerda, whose previous writing credits include The Birds, Rudolph, The Red Hosed Reindeer, Touched By Jayne Mansfield, Joan Crawford Goes To Hell!!! And sCarrie! The Musical. Cerda confesses "The Poseidon Adventure" has always been one of my all-time favorite movies. Its enduring popularity and fiercely devoted following have always fascinated me. The obvious camp appeal aside, there's a very important theme – fighting against adversity, no matter what the odds."

(including the Stella Stevens tribute "Just Panties (What Else Do I Need?)" as well as "Bachelor Haberdasher," "Mr. Rogo (The Only Way Is Up)" and "In The Water, I’m A Very Skinny Lady") can be enjoyed on the Original Cast Recording available at www.handbagproductions.org.
The show is directed by David Zak, artistic director of Bailiwick Repertory Theater (and recently dubbed one of "Chicago theater’s 50 leading characters" by New City – Hickson and Cerda steadfastly maintain they were 51 & 52 respectively on the list). Zak was drawn to the show because "Hell In A Handbag is one of the hottest young companies on the scene today. POSEIDON! Is funny, irreverent, heart-breaking and trashy … how could I not want to spend the Summer on board?"
