Chicago, IL -
Join Event Chair Sandy Zurawicz and Honorary Co-Chairs Rosemary Rocha and Teresita J. Diaz for A Taste for Every Palate, Howard Brown Health Center's food and wine tasting extravaganza presented by American Family Insurance. This year's event, supporting women's programming at Howard Brown, is May 19, 2008, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago Ave., with a Premier Sponsor Reception and Award Ceremony beginning at 5:30 pm., and general admission at 6:30 pm, $150 and $75 ($100 at the door) respectively.
Enjoy an evening of eclectic edibles and succulent spirits provided by Chicago's finest LGBT-friendly restaurants while surrounded by nearly 1,000 friends and allies. Participating restaurants and vendors include: Adobo Grill, Ann Sather, Bistro Campagne, Broadway Cellars, Deleece, Firefly, Francesca's on Bryn Mawr, Goose Island, Hahn Estates, J&L Catering, Joey's Brickhouse, Kit Kat Lounge & Supper Club, La Cocina de Frida, La Cucina di Donatella, M. Henry, Magnolia Café, Miller, More Cupcakes, Partida Tequila, Pernod Ricard USA/Stoli, POM Wonderful, Riques Regional Mexican Food, Shochu, Sidetrack, and Windy City Sweets.
New participant to this year's festivities is Andersonville's La Cocina de Frida, a highly acclaimed new restaurant in Chicago's expanding culinary scene, named for Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. When asked why they decided to participate, La Cocina de Frida proprieter Marlene Benitez had this to say: "I believe in Howard Brown. We are a woman-owned and operated restaurant and want to support an organization that empowers women. Frida Kahlo was a strong woman who stood behind her principles and her culture, and we want to do the same."
This year, Howard Brown will honor G. Simone Koehlinger, Psy.D, with the Cornerstone Award for her tireless efforts as a LGBT researcher, advocate, and educator. In her current capacity as the Director of the Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Health, Simone is responsible for developing and implementing citywide programs to increase health care access and provider competency. She is actively engaged in multiple community efforts and social marketing campaigns to enhance the health of, and health care delivery to, LGBT people in Chicago. She co-chairs the Chicago LGBT Taskforce for Substance Use and Abuse and participates in a number of local health and advocacy groups. Between 2000 and 2005, she served as a Project Coordinator for research projects involving HIV prevention and tobacco cessation at Howard Brown Health Center. With a strong clinical and research background, Simone views LGBT health not only from a scientific perspective, but a social justice angle as well.
