The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) on Thursday announced a $100,000 donation to the Russian Freedom Fund, a vehicle for making financial contributions in support of Russia's LGBT rights movement and efforts to combat anti-gay discrimination in the former Soviet Republic.

"With less than two months until the Sochi Olympic Games, it's time to harness the tidal wave of support for Russia's LGBT community emerging around the world," said HRC President Chad Griffin in announcing the contribution. "Now more than ever, we must expose the Russian government's hateful campaign against its own people and support LGBT Russians enduring oppression and violence every day."

Anastasia Smirnova, coordinator of the coalition of Russian LGBT organizations, thanked HRC for its support.

"While the safety of our community continues to be put at risk, more and more individuals and groups stand up to defend and promote equality," she said. "HRC's support will help this energy last and will contribute to a safer and better life for LGBT people in Russia."

HRC said that its donation was raised through its Love Conquers Hate campaign.

In a 90-second video, the group shared photos of celebrities and everyday people who had posted online photos of themselves wearing a Love Conquers Hate t-shirt.
