Chicago, IL -
For the past two decades, Bailiwick Repertory has served to introduce Midwestern audiences to some of the best GLBT theatre by Chicago, American, and International artists.
On July 7th, 2007, the Bailiwick Repertory returns with their annual Pride Series.
"... as things get more and more mainstream, we always debate whether our Pride Series is necessary," David Zak, artistic director of Chicago's Bailiwick Repertory Theatre, tells BackStage.com. "And every year we come back and say yes. There are still a lot of things to explore in the gay community in terms of our politics, and so many of the behaviors are either new to this generation or are the same behaviors that have been around in the community from the beginning."
Pride Series 2007:
LOOK INSIDE AND LISTEN is the new title for the Midwestern Premiere of two one-act plays penned by playwright Jake Jay. The first piece, THE LADY WHO LOVED, is a poignant tale of love and loss, friendship and family. Nominated for a GLAAD Media Award in 2002, this story focuses on those lost, those left behind to remember and those who arrived too late. It is a tale of acceptance, tolerance and hope. Its companion piece, HOW TO RUIN LOVE, is a comic look at two middle-aged men struggling to find intimacy and happiness in an age of continuous loss. Ruggy wants more commitment, Vincent desires more freedom and it is only with the help of the beleaguered goddess Butch Venus, that the two men learn the truest lessons about love and understanding in the arms of another man.
LOOK INSIDE AND LISTEN previews Thursday, July 12 at 8:00 ($10) and opens Saturday July 14, at 5:00 ($25) and plays Thursdays at 8:00, Saturdays and Sundays at 5:00 through August 19. All tickets are $25.
Betsey Cassell returns to the Bailiwick to direct Pamela White-Raines, Robert A. Lynch, Keta Roth, Gregory Payne, Robert Ertel, Erin Lane and Cyndi Rhoads in this unique double bill of inter-related one-acts.
In addition to LOOK INSIDE AND LISTEN, Bailiwick will have several other pieces in its Pride Series including Just Say Love; A Bitter Taste; Sharps, Flats, and Other Alterations and Rainbow Connection.
Do relationships start in the bedroom or in the heart? Physical attractions appear to be the obvious explanation for two people becoming a pair, but are they really the reflection of something sublime and everlasting, and, dare we say, spiritual? When Guy and Doug meet on a park bench it looks like their relationship can go nowhere but into bed. But it seems forces beyond their control have something else in mind especially when they JUST SAY LOVE.
JUST SAY LOVE opens Saturday July 7 at 8:00 and plays Saturdays at 8:00 and Sundays at 2:00 through August 26. All tickets are $25. It is directed by Mike Gillett, and features Nathan Cann and Todd Aiello.
In A BITTER TASTE a mild-mannered professor and a smooth-talking divorce attorney explore the underbelly of their lifelong friendship after an under-aged male prostitute throws their world off balance. No assumption is safe in Kevin Christopher Snipes' unsettling take on men, sex and friendship set on the north side of Chicago. Matt Trucano directs in the Chicago premiere of this provocative new play first produced at Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York in 2006.
A BITTER TASTE opens Wednesday, July 18th at 8:00 and plays Wednesdays at 8:00, Saturdays at 2:00 and Sundays at 8:00 through August 26th. Please note there are no Saturday performances on August 18 and 25. All tickets are $25.
SHARPS, FLATS, AND OTHER ALTERATIONS is a new musical which follows a man's struggle to protect those closest to him when he is compelled to lie about what he knows to be true. Watch how the strands of his childhood faith unravel. Laugh-and cry too-at the ingenious distractions he invents whenever his friends and family become suspicious. Marvel, when the truth ultimately comes out, at his own startling discovery! Murphy's score is witty and haunting. You will leave the theater humming the tunes, while reflecting on the lyrics lingering in your heart.
SHARPS, FLATS, AND OTHER ALTERATIONS performs on July 16 and 23 at 8:00. Tickets are $15. Written and performed by Mikel Murphy. Directed by Brian LaDuca.
Ashlee Hardgrave and James Morehead present RAINBOW CONNECTION, a musical tribute to signs and symbols of gay culture, issues and history. The symbols range from the standard rainbow flag to the AIDS ribbon and Pink Triangle. They will thrill audiences with their own brand of entertainment by combining various musical styles, from classical to cabaret and Broadway.
RAINBOW CONNECTION plays on Mondays, July 30, August 6, 13, and 20 at 8:00. Tickets are $15.
