Same-sex couples in Indiana could face jail for wanting to get married

Indiana's Republican-controlled state legislature has passed a law that makes it a felony for same-sex couples to apply for a marriage license.
The revamped law makes furnishing false information on a marriage license punishable by 18 months in prison and a $10,000 fine. The new law, which begins July 1, 2014, also punishes anyone for performing a same-sex marriage with up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
The New Civil Rights Movement noted, "While many other states are reevaluating their laws concerning marriage equality in the light of the Supreme Court decision that struck down a key part of the Defense of Marriage Act, Indiana lawmakers are considering doubling down on their anti-equality posture."
Indiana lawmakers are also considering a constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage in the Hoosier state, a move supported by Republican Gov. Mike Pence.
