Springfield, IL -
On a close vote of 61-57, the Illinois House sent a bill to the Senate which approves the use of marijuana for medical purposes. The Senate has previously passed legislation similar to this bill which suggests that it will likely be adopted.
Governor Quinn has yet to make a decision on whether he would sign the bill but appears to be open minded.
The prescribing and distribution of medical marijuana would be heavily regulated.
Although controversial, marijuana is viewed by advocates as an alternative to harsh chemical based medications in treatment of chronic illnesses like cancer, HIV or multiple sclerosis.
