Marriage equality vote could be on horizon in Illinois General Assembly

Illinois State Representative Greg Harris, the highest-ranking openly gay elected official in the state, said Thursday that its only a matter of time before a marriage equality bill is up for a vote in the Illinois General Assembly.
"We have some opportunities to move legislation in the veto session and we just need to be prepared," Harris told the Windy City Times.
Harris introduced legislation in February which would legalize same-sex marriage in the state. The earliest lawmakers could take a vote on it is during the upcoming fall session. A lame duck veto session later this month could provide a rare opportunity for the General Assembly to pass difficult legislation.
"Time is certainly with us," said Harris, who encouraged LGBTs to contact their legislators to voice support for marriage equality in Illinois.
